Group Lessons

South Street Piano Studio

Davidson, North Carolina

Roughly once a month we hold a group class at my home studio, where we work in a one-room-schoolhouse mode. Students of every level learn about music theory and history, through games that engage them where they are in their musical journey. I can tailor every activity to each student. eg., think Twister on a giant keyboard on the floor: I can ask an advanced student to touch a C minor chord using two feet and one hand. A beginner can simply move one foot to a C-sharp!

In addition to learning about music reading and theory, we can listen to famous pieces of music, or improvise together, on the spot, using Boom Whackers or other small instruments. We can sharpen our rhythmic skills by playing hand drums.

Most important, we have a chance for each person to perform something they’ve already learned well. Students listening learn to be a respectful audience, and will grow to be our future concertgoers. Those playing become familiar with the formal rituals of recitals - bowing, accepting applause graciously, etc. - while still in a casual, familiar space. Everyone has the chance to perform something they’ve mastered, preparing them for future recitals, and giving them confidence and poise, which may cross over to all their endeavors in life.
